What areas will Young Writers’ City be working in? And who with?
Our Young Writers’ City project is for young people aged 12- 23 years, living in Newcastle. We offer support to develop future writers, journalists, programmers and producers. We also want to hear from readers and those who want to attend cultural events too!
Work with schools and community groups
Young Writers’ City launched in April 2015 with a flagship project in Walbottle Campus, and with summer writing activities in local libraries. Since then we’ve worked with Walker Technology College, Excelsior Academy, Newcastle Sixth Form College, Heaton Manor, Benfield School and West End Women and Girls Centre. We’ve made films, written and recorded our own songs and raps, performed a spoken work symphony, held summer schools and set up loads of after school reading and writing clubs.
Work with individuals
We can also support individual young people that we meet through our projects to create their own events, exhibitions or performances. And we’re up for helping to develop leadership or event-management skills, so the young people we work with will be able to go it alone in the future.
Tell us what you like to do
All of our Young Writers’ City projects are developed by listening to what young people in Newcastle want to do. If you want to make a short film, do some poetry or write and perform a script, just tell us and we’ll do our best to pair you up with the right project or work with you to get something started where you live.
Loads of opportunities
Young Writers’ City works alongside Cuckoo Young Writers groups, Cuckoo Review and all of our other work with young people. So once you’ve joined a project or come along to a workshop, you’ll then be able to access all of our activities and our amazing network of young writers.
