Projects happening now

Spoken word symphony at Excelsior Academy

We’re working on a spoken word symphony with Year 8 and 9 at Excelsior Academy’s Collingwood School. Pupils are working with wordsmiths Fred Phethean, Rowan McCabe and Bob Beagrie to produce a spoken word extravaganza in February 2016, which will be performed in front of an audience of peers and parents. The piece will tackle themes of identity, languages and what “home” means.

Campaigning & performing at West End Women and Girls Centre

We’re working with two groups at West End Women and Girls Centre! From playwriting to spoken word, the Young Lesbians’ group have been working with a selection of writers and next up is a spoken word project, which will culminate in their debut performance. We will also be helping the Older Girls’ group to select a writer and visual artist who will work with the girls to produce posters and zines, as part of their campaign on issues of sexual and domestic violence.

Arts Award with Walker Technology College

After school on a Monday at Walker we’re offering students the chance to do creative writing AND work towards their Arts Award. The weekly session is open to all year groups and is run by English teacher Martyn Webster and poet Bob Beagrie. We’re trying out loads of different poetic techniques and will be presenting the final piece of performance poetry in May, as part of an Awards ceremony. It’s going to be fantastic.

Do you have an idea for the next Young Writers’ City project?

We’d love YOU to get involved in making Newcastle THE place to be for young writers.

If you are a young person in Newcastle and have an idea for a project- as an individual, or as part of an established group (like a youth group or drama club)- then get in touch and let us know.
