Proud Words: Our new LGBT+ reading and creative writing project for schools

New Writing North is looking for schools in Newcastle and Durham to join us for our exciting new LGBT+ reading and creative writing project, Proud Words.

We want your school to host a Proud Words group, which will see professional writers engage with students by discussing literature regarding LGBT+ issues. Over fourteen sessions, students will be able to discuss a wide range of prose and poetry, and groups will be encouraged to produce their own works of creative writing with the help of our visiting writers. The work will be collected in an anthology that can be shared amongst the wider school and community, which also provides students with an early opportunity to see their work published.

Our first session will take place on 12th October 2016, where groups will be invited to join us at the Durham Book Festival event, ‘What is Normal?’ hosted by two of the biggest names in Young Adult fiction, Juno Dawson and Lisa Williamson. Tickets for this event are free for Proud Words participants, and the event will provide yet another opportunity for young writers to directly engage with professional authors.

At the heart of this project is providing a safe space for young people to explore their emotions via a creative platform. During our groups, students will be given the freedom to work on their own writing, while critically engaging with existing material, in the company of experienced writers and peers.

New Writing North will provide all of the books for sessions, and groups will consist of around 15-20 students each. Once all of the sessions have been completed, two schools will be selected based on their commitment to maintaining the Proud Words group in the future.

This project is free for schools involved.

If you would like your school to be part of the programme, please get in touch! As a student, you will need to find a teacher to fill out the form, and send it to us by 19th September 2016. If you have any questions in the meantime, please get in touch with Lizzie Nixon at lizzie@newwritingnorth.com or call the New Writing North team on 0191 2048850.
