Proud Words Schools

Here at New Writing North we are super excited to announce that we will be working with Heaton Manor School and Benfield School in Newcastle on Proud Words, our LGBT+ reading and creative writing project.

Students from both schools will be working with three professional writers across the academic year to read, discuss and write in response to literature with LGBT+ themes. Over fourteen sessions, students will be able to discuss a wide range of prose and poetry, and will be encouraged to produce their own works of creative writing with the help of the visiting writers.

The project was devised in response to feedback from lots of our young writers who said they found it very difficult to discuss LGBT+ issues in school. They thought a writing group that did just that would be a really good opportunity for young people to explore these issues through their reading and writing, and we agreed!

The groups will collect their work together in an anthology, as well as holding a big celebration event for friends and family where they’ll show off all the amazing writing they have created.

And as if that wasn’t enough, we’re delivering lots of free books for the students to read, as well as sending them to Durham Book Festival to see YA authors Lisa Williamson and Juno Dawson talk about their work at the event ‘What is Normal?’.

We’ll keep you updated on how it goes, so keep an eye on the Cuckoo website for Proud Words news!
