Nominate a talented young writer for the Matthew Hale Award!

Cuckoo is currently looking for teachers, writers, parents, siblings, youth workers (and anyone else who knows a young person!) to nominate a talented young writer (12-18) from the North of England for the Matthew Hale Award 2016.

This special award is for talented young people aged 12-18 years old who want to develop their interest in writing and literature, whatever the form (fiction, journalism, poetry, blogging, drama, songwriting etc.) but who lack the opportunity to do so. The winner will receive a bespoke package of “stuff” worth £500, which will be tailored to the needs of the individual winner- so it might be a laptop, opportunities to travel to arts events, books etc.

Last year’s winner, Jowita Krasik, was nominated by editor of NARC. magazine Claire Dupree for her review writing for Cuckoo Review. Claire would urge EVERYONE to nominate a young person:

“It’s such a privilege to be able to support young writers in the region, and see them go on to broaden their skills and have experiences they wouldn’t otherwise be able to have. Nominating for the Matthew Hale Award can offer vital assistance to a young person who shows promise.”

And Jowita has had an absolutely fantastic year, following her win. This is her story:

“Winning the award is probably the most amazing opportunity I have ever been given. Not only did I get to meet members of the wonderful Hale family who created the award, but I also got to attend the Northern Writers Award ceremony and see loads of wonderfully talented individuals walk up on the stage to receive their awards. It was truly unforgettable!

Since receiving the award I have continued writing Cuckoo Review. I have also had the amazing opportunity to review some of Northern Stage’s performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as well as interviewing Philip Pullman himself at the Durham Book Festival!

With the money from the award I bought a new laptop to aid my writing, and spent a wonderful weekend in London seeing “Wicked” and “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time” in the West End, as well as visiting the Harry Potter Studios in Watford.

I would never have been able to do these things without winning the Matthew Hale Award; it’s all been really inspirational and I would not change it for anything! I will remain forever grateful to Cuckoo, New Writing North and the Hale family for giving me this amazing opportunity to further explore the power of the written word!

I’m now applying to universities and hope to get a place to start in September this year. And I will always continue to write!”
