A Political Refugee by Leah Chan

My radar detected. Hostility. This foreign territory.

Ascension of a revolution. Humanity.

Submerging me. Resentment. Disdain.

I was rendered alien. Attacked. Like a foreign cell.

Like a bug manifesting in society. Native hell.

I’m the alien. A parasite. A pain.

Left his world. Expelled. Castaway.

The search on his radar for the lights of a better today?

Rejected alien. His existence a social suicide.

Worked to earn approvement, gained a salary of derision.

His scaly skin; prominent ears; his omniscient eye. He tried to hide.

If they peeled away the scales they’d see a mirror. Your own reflection.

You’ve got to understand.

Big foot crushed all of the land, our territory.

Humanity couldn’t supply his insatiable demand.

Zap. Draining our longevity. Zap.

We asked the alien politely to leave. He refused.

We forced the alien bleakly to leave. He refused.

Raising our arms, we threw maces of malice.

Hostile helicopters.

You’ve got to understand.

Zap.

Open arms.

Zap.

In space I make this endless voyage. For acceptance.

Over seas of stars. Deserts of planets.

Seas brimming. Rejection. Deserts. Desolation.

Satellite speeches. Broadcast me. Evil. Am I a parasite?

A bug? Manifesting in society? Native hell?

Me, the alien. The parasite. A pain.

His endless voyage travelling

depthless deserts just to fit in.

Scanning scaled seas,

Concealing the warm sand.

Like his appearance conceals his warm

but bruised heart.

A heart which could power the Milkyway.

The isolated heart, the warmth mired in a void. Space’s vacuum sucked up the warmth.

You’ve got to understand.

His endless voyage. An invasion.

Breach barriers we put up against the alien. World domination.

We gave him depthless deserts.

We gave him a spacecraft of segregation.

We brimmed his scaled seas with rejection.

His existence- an impossible community cohesion.

STOP WORLD DOMINATION!

SEND THEM BACK ON THEIR SPACECRAFT!

BAN SPACE INVADERS!

You’ve got to understand.

What’s going on I don’t understand?

ANHILATE ALIEN INVADERS!

They brandish their written demand.

Why do you stand there barbaric?

ET GO HOME!

They pervade the word on the media.

Bludgeoning me with your sticks and your card.

BEAUTY SHOULD OF KILLED THE BEAST!

Sorry I made your life hard….

THEY VAPOURISED OUR JOBS!

But all I ever wanted was acceptance.

THEY’LL EXTERMINATE OUR ECONOMY!

I fled my world. Expelled. Castaway.

He left this world. Rejected.

He still searches. Switching on his radar.

The lights of a better today?
