76 by Meghana Mysore

In honor of Maya Angelou

& she spoke of a bird
and flying high above the grounds
all the same

& you wondered what that bird was
thinking, so high above the ground,
so far removed
from the noisy lives
of the preoccupied humans
who lingered, lurking on their computers,
caged in a way the bird could never be

& they read news articles
bludgeoning the loss of the “great author, poet, and civil rights activist”

& I wondered
how the Washington Post summated her life
in a mere 76 seconds

& the bird, flying high and high,
begins to taste the sun
