In areas where we have a Cuckoo Young Writers group, we offer a limited number of FREE taster sessions in schools with young people aged 12+. A taster session is a two-hour session with a professional writer, for up to 30 pupils at a time. Taster sessions aim to be fun, creative and allows students to see what goes on in a writing group session.
Work in Schools
Cuckoo Young Writers also works in schools. A lot of our work is project specific (i.e. tied to our Cuckoo Young Writers or Young Writers City programme) and we work mostly with young people aged 11+, but we are always happy to talk to teachers who would like to bring writers into their schools, support their creative writing teaching or work with us to build a project. This is what we can offer:
Become part of Young Writers City
As part of our Young Writers City programme we are working with schools and communities in the areas surrounding Walbottle and the East End and West End of Newcastle. We are currently working in Excelsior Academy, Newcastle Sixth Form College, Walbottle Campus and Walker Technology College.
Writing projects for schools
We can offer school specific packages that offer pupils the experience of completing a project with a professional writer. This can be tailored to your schools need, and we can also facilitate Arts Awards in schools. Examples of projects are:
- Spoken word projects
- Creating a school soap-opera
- Writing and directing a school play
- Producing school anthologies and zines
- Lunch-time/ after school creative writing clubs
We’re always keen to talk to any schools or teachers about developing a project!
We’re always here for advice. So if you are looking for a specific type of writers to come into your school or if you are a secondary school, would like one of the Cuckoo team to talk to your pupils about writing opportunities, just ask!
If you would like to talk to us about work in schools, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 0191 204 8850.
